Why this site exists

Fonts are the part of ZPL that nobody explains well. The official manual documents every command, but it won't tell you why your text came out two-thirds the size on the new printer, or why a font that worked on Friday has vanished by Monday. The answers are scattered across forum threads, old support posts and trial and error. We wanted them in one place, written plainly, with examples you can paste and try.

The guides here are organised the way problems actually arrive. If you're learning, the core reference takes you from "what is a ZPL font" through sizing and printer differences. If you need something special, such as a brand typeface or a language the built-in fonts can't handle, the custom font guides cover downloading, storage and encoding. If something's broken, the troubleshooting pages are organised by symptom, and if you're deciding between options, the comparisons give you a view before you commit.

Where most people begin

The most common starting point is a size problem. Somebody designs a label, prints it, and the text is smaller or larger than expected. Nine times out of ten the cause is resolution, which is why font sizes by DPI is one of the busiest pages here. The second most common is accents or non-English letters that print wrong, which usually comes down to the character set; Unicode and code pages sorts that out. The third is a downloaded font that disappears, covered by flash versus RAM.

If you'd rather learn by doing, open the label generator, type some text and watch the ZPL appear. Change the font, the size, the alignment, and see what each option does. Then paste the result into the live preview and edit it directly. It's a quick way to build intuition.

A word about accuracy

ZPL behaves differently across printer models and firmware versions, and we can't test every combination. Where we describe behaviour that varies, we say so, and we point you to a test you can run on your own printer. Treat the numbers here as starting points, check them against your manufacturer's programming guide, and always print a test label before a production run. If you find an error, please tell us and we'll fix it.

The site is independent. It isn't connected to Zebra Technologies, and the disclaimer explains what that means. You can read more about who we are and why in the about page, or browse the blog for longer articles on specific problems.

ZPL fonts in 30 seconds

ZPL II has two kinds of fonts: fixed-size bitmap fonts (A to H) and scalable fonts (0 and GS, plus any TrueType font you download). Select one with ^A, position with ^FO, print with ^FD.
